Claude Cowork vs Claude Code: Which Claude Product Fits Which Job?
Last updated
Last checked against official Anthropic, OpenAI and Google pages on October 17, 2026.
Claude now has five ways to get work done: Chat, Projects, Skills, Cowork and Claude Code. They overlap, and the names don't make the choice obvious. This guide explains each in plain English, lists plan prices, and gives you a decision table and small-business examples.
The short answer
- Chat answers questions and drafts things with you, one message at a time.
- Projects hold the files and instructions Claude should remember for one area of work.
- Skills teach Claude how you like a repeat task done.
- Cowork takes a task and does it for you across your files and tools, then hands back finished work.
- Claude Code does the same kind of hands-off work, but for software: writing, fixing and shipping code.
Anthropic's own one-line version: "Claude Code is built for software engineering" while "Cowork is built for non-coding knowledge work" (Claude Cowork).
The five pieces in plain English
Chat
The regular Claude conversation on web, desktop and mobile. It can search the web, create files, run code and connect to your apps, even on the Free plan (Pricing). In regular chat, Claude "can't access your files directly" (Claude Cowork), so you upload or paste what it needs.
Projects
Self-contained workspaces with their own chat history and knowledge base. You upload documents and set project instructions, and Claude uses them in every chat inside that project. Free users can create up to five projects (What are projects?). Anthropic sums up the difference neatly: "projects store knowledge, skills perform tasks" (Claude Academy).
Skills
A skill is a folder of instructions (a SKILL.md file, plus optional reference files and scripts) that Claude loads when a task matches the skill's description (Create custom skills). Skills work on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and need code execution turned on (Use skills in Claude). Skills you enable also work in Cowork and in Claude Code when you sign in with the same account.
Cowork
Cowork "brings Claude Code's agentic capabilities to knowledge work beyond coding" (Get started with Claude Cowork). You describe the outcome, Claude makes a plan, works through the steps, and delivers files such as Excel spreadsheets with working formulas, PowerPoint decks and formatted documents. Key points from the Help Center:
- Paid plans only: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise.
- Runs on desktop, web and mobile. The desktop app is needed for local files, browser use and computer use.
- Tasks run in the cloud, so work continues if you close your laptop. Since October 6, 2026, new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run in the cloud.
- Type
/schedulein a Cowork task to set up recurring work. - Agentic tasks use more of your usage limit than regular chat.
Anthropic is also rolling out a combined experience where "Claude Cowork is now just Claude": no Chat or Cowork switch, and Claude decides whether you need a quick answer or a task. If your message box has no "Chat" and "Cowork" options, you already have it (Get started with Claude Cowork).
Claude Code
Claude Code "reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools." It runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains, in the desktop app's Code tab, and on the web at claude.ai/code (Claude Code overview). It's included in all paid plans and shares the same usage pool as your chats (Pricing). So "Claude Code vs Claude" isn't a choice between two AIs: it's the same Claude, set up for software.

Small-business examples
Landscaping company. Price lists and past quotes live in a Project, a quote-writing Skill sets the format, and quotes get drafted in Chat. Free works to start.
Bookkeeper. Each month, clients drop receipts into a folder. In Cowork on the desktop app, the bookkeeper points Claude at the folder and asks for a formatted expense report, one of Anthropic's own listed examples (Get started with Claude Cowork). Needs Pro or higher.
Marketing agency. A scheduled Cowork task pulls last week's numbers from connected tools and builds a slide deck every Monday morning, similar to the weekly marketing readout shown on Anthropic's Cowork page.
Online shop with a custom site. A part-time developer uses Claude Code in VS Code to fix checkout bugs and add a feature, then opens a pull request. Included in Pro.
How it compares with Codex and Antigravity
Here's a fair, facts-only snapshot from each vendor's own pages. We haven't tested them side by side.
OpenAI Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. OpenAI says Codex is included in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise. Plus is $20/month and covers Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension and on iOS. Go is $8/month, and Pro plans are $100, $200 or $500 a month. ChatGPT Business is listed at $25 per user per month billed monthly. Codex also supports skills, plugins and MCP, much like Claude Code (Codex pricing).
Google Antigravity is Google's "agentic development platform," with an app, a CLI, an IDE and an SDK (Google Antigravity). Individuals can use it for $0 with basic weekly limits (Antigravity pricing). Higher limits come with Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) and Google AI Ultra ($99.99 or $199.99/month) (Google AI plans). Teams get it through Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise (Antigravity plans).
What this means for you: Codex and Antigravity are coding tools, so they compete with Claude Code. Neither replaces Cowork for non-coding office work. If you already pay for ChatGPT or Google AI, try its coding agent first. If your team already uses Claude, Claude Code comes with your plan.
The bottom line
Start with Chat and Projects on the Free plan. Add Skills once you notice you keep typing the same instructions. Move to Pro when you want Claude to do tasks in Cowork, or to work on code with Claude Code.
